How to keep warm in the Winter

As we approach Winter, it’s becoming more important to keep yourself safe and warm. It’s also becoming more difficult - so what are some reliable ways to keep yourself toasty as the temperature drops? There are lots of things you can do, and each one will get you closer to being cosy. But, by combining them all it will almost be like Summer never left us behind! Let’s explore what you can do…

Layers

Chances are you know this already, but you can start by dressing yourself up in lots of layers! Layers will help insulate your body and regulate your temperature, so pile on as much as you feel comfortable in. You can try thick underwear or trousers, maybe an old hoodie or a couple of jumpers - mix and match your clothes, and figure out what makes you the cosiest!

Blankets

It doesn’t need to be winter for blankets to keep you cosy, but it is the season that they shine the most. Whether you’re just on your own or snuggled up next to someone else, they’re a very comfy way to keep yourself warm. Blankets help to slow down heat transfer, preventing your body heat from going out into the air. It’s always useful to have one around - so make sure you stock up!

Slippers or Thick Socks

Because of their large surface area and quantity of blood vessels, our feet are open to a lot of blood flow, which means a lot of heat flows out of them. Because of this, thick socks and slippers are a useful way to keep yourself warm. It’s actually a myth that lots of heat is lost through our heads, but it’s true of hands and feet, so keep them wrapped up and stay cosy!

Warm Drinks

Whether tea, coffee or hot chocolate is your drink of choice, hot liquids are a tasty way to keep yourself warm. While they don’t actually have too much of an effect on your internal body temperature, they will still keep you warm. Cupping one in your hands will certainly keep your fingers toasty, and the steam coming from the top will keep your face warm too. Plus drinking them actually makes you happier, so what is there to lose?

Hot Water Bottle

Speaking of hot liquids, hot water bottles will no doubt keep you warm too. A hot water bottle is made out of rubber or thermoplastic, which insulates the water inside keeping it hotter for longer. Obviously, they don’t last forever, but they do last long enough to keep you comfy! They’re also a great companion at night to keep you warm as you sleep, but that shouldn’t stop you from filling one up in the daytime, too. So if you want a hot liquid to keep you toastier for longer, they’re a great item to get.

Keep Active

There’s lots going on that heats you up when you exercise - including your muscles moving and your body metabolising fat. When you start sweating, it's actually a mechanism that helps keep your body heat down - but remember it can dehydrate you, so keep a glass of water nearby. You don’t need to go hard to keep your body heat up though, less intensive movements are more than enough to do the job. So, not only can you keep yourself warm, but also healthy!

Central Heating

Of course you’ll want to make sure your central heating is up to snuff if you want to keep yourself warm in the winter. It helps to have a well maintained and efficient boiler, even if it's costly in the short term, as it is worth the investment. Make sure you contact a qualified professional to do the job, because it's potentially dangerous work and an expert is essential. With a sturdy, well-maintained central heating system, you’ll never have to worry about getting too cold in the winter and can rest easy knowing it won’t fail unexpectedly.
